 Post subject: SWTOR INI Graphics Tweaks
PostPosted: Thu Jan 19, 2012 4:36 pm
Hello All!

I will try here to explain the INI tweaks I have been experimenting with to get SWTOR looking at its best. You can try a few of these tricks and let me know if you have questions!

1) File Location:

The file can be found here >>> C:\Users\<Your User Name Here>\AppData\Local\SWTOR\swtor\settings

The above folder however is hidden, so you have to open the Folder Tools > Options > View tab and choose to show system files and choose to show hidden files (two options to change).

2) File Name:

The file name is >>> client_settings.ini <<< It can be edited using Notepad.

Before editing anything I HIGHLY recommend making a copy of the file and saving it as backup if anything goes wrong.

3) Changes:

Inside the file there is a section header >>> [Renderer] <<<

Under that section header there will be the many settings, below I am listing the highest settings to give you reflections on metal surfaces and all sorts of bells and whistles on the graphics.

I will mention which ones to probably lower down if you are having lag after maxing everything up, but I think if you have a modern/relatively new graphics card it should be able to run the maximum settings without AA. Adding AA along with everything maxed will require a slightly higher end card. You can compromise once you max everything first then start taking things down one by one.

>>> If a setting below already exists in the file, simply change its value.

>>> If the setting does not exist then copy paste it alone in a separate line BELOW the header [Renderer].

>>> If I have skipped a setting and did not list it below, this means it has no bearing on the quality of graphics as far as I know and it should stay the same value you find in the original INI file.

4) Settings

DynamicLightsLimit = 50

MeshLODQuality = -1

TextureAnisotropy = 16

FarClipScale = 6

PlantDensity = 150

doShadows = true

doBlobShadows = true

UseMinSpecShaders = false

EnableBloom = 1

VerticalSyncState = true

TextureQuality = 0

AllowDepthOfField = true

SpeedTreeDistanceScale = 5.0

DebugAdvEnviroLighting = true

enableadvenvirolighting = true

5) Saving and Ensuring the Changes Persist

After you finish the above, save the file and close it. It is important however to change the permission setting of the INI file to Read Only. DO that by right clicking the file in the folder and choosing Properties.

The game during patches will override the INI file and may reduce the tweaked values down to the default ones.

6) Additional Tweaks

After trying the maxed values above, if you are experiencing lags or reduced FPS (especially on planets with lots of trees/grass), then try reducing the values of the following settings and try again:

PlantDensity = 150
SpeedTreeDistanceScale = 5.0

7) AA

Personally, I tried the AA option that was added in the recent patch and I did not like the quality of it, so I went back to my ATI Catalyst override. The AA from the gfx is better due to giving you the option to choose the type of AA (Adaptive Multisample). However this may cause a slight drop in FPS on older cards.

Note however that in order to have this working properly, you need to have the following line in the INI file:

AntiAliasingLevel = 0

If you enable it in-game it will have a value other than zero. Set it to zero if you prefer the override from the gfx.

The above tweaks makes the game look fantastic! Try them out and let me know if you have questions!

I have tested your ini TWEAK and found out this changes to the ini works great on my PC. Did some minor changes, this should be good I think?

Here is a CFG maker i found on the world wide inter web... that might be usefull.

And like Oberon says, be sure to backup your client_settings.ini, before you make any changes.
