Well it's getting released on 22/12/2011, what a strange date 3 days before Christmas

Now I must somehow convince my folks that I won't spend Christmas with them, but in mossy tombs of Korriban and shiny casinos of Nar Shaddaa.

A formidable challenge.

(Just joking. Early Game Access will start few days before the official launch, so I guess it won't be that bad.)

I had some hopes it could be earlier, but will be fine nonetheless. Consider also that those who pre-ordered the game will have an early access to the servers, probably a few days before December 22th.

Apparently, also, Diablo III release has been posponed to early 2012... Looks like there's stil some months ahead to finish old games!

For those who are interested, here's the latest gameplay trailer which shows the game features and announces the release date...
Can't wait, finally an MMO which actually plays like an RPG and tells a story around your character... It's not still Guild Wars 2, but certainly a serious attempt to make the genre finally move forward...

Is anyone playtesting it atm? How about some short review, so we get an idea how it works compared to WoW for example

I haven't been lucky enough to get a beta key (although not sure if beta is even live yet)

I'm going to go into this game with an open mind and try my best not to compare it to wow

Well, there's an abundance of coverage through many medias: websites, youtube, gameplay footage from beta testers, forums discussions of every detail, game conventions presentations, etc.
I am not in the beta myself, but if I get some time I can try to gather in detail the main points from all what I saw, read, listened.

For now, I would say this.

Overall the game has several points in common with WoW:
- Two factions
- 3 class roles (tank, dps, healer)
- Talent specializations
- PvE dungeons and raids
- PvP battlegrounds
- RP servers
- Quest based levelling

It also improves the gameplay, though, on many points, essentially trying to bring the MMO experience more in line with nowadays RPGs:
- Fully voice acted gameplay/quests/storytelling in any part of the game
- Moral and convesation choices (i.e.: even dungeons have a story where you can decide to take different paths)
- NPC companions with their own storyline who follow you through the game progression
- Wider character and companions customization
- Player housing in the form of personal spaceships, with rooms and crew

It's still not completely a new gameplay concept at all if compared to WoW (I think GW2 will be) but it tries to change radically on several aspects.
I played WoW since Vanilla day one, almost non stop, doing every kind of thing, from raiding, to PvP, to RPing. And I enjoyed it immensely. But honestly it's now an old game and under many points of view the experience it offers it's quite subpar if compared to any serious 2011 single player RPG. If you played Dragon Age or The Witcher, you get an idea. Mind you: I am sure it can be still immensely enjoyable and I am sure it will be still quite flourishing for a long time. But I am also persuaded that it's not by chance that for the first time in its history, during the last two financial quarters WoW lost many subscriptions worldwide. The way WoW let's you interact with a story and with the world is quite limited. You control no real choices; you talk to static NPCs and read walls of quest text instead of seing things actually happening around you; and the visuals, even if still nice, are honestly dated. What's disappointing me at the moment is a certain lack of courage from Blizzard. Instead of using their expansions to actually bring radical innovations to the game, they just keep adding larger quantities of the same kind of content. I can't blame them, overall: with such a big commercial success, why should you risk?
But now I am just rumbling and it's late... Sorry about that! If I can spare some time, I'll try to gather some more information about the actual game here... ;)

Thanks for that informative post Lyrael, and I fully agree with your feelings about WoW. For me, the main thing that keeps me in WoW is a) because I was such a huge fan of the warcraft series prior to it b) because the usability and mechanics of the game are so very smooth - everything feels like it just works and c) because there hasn't been anything better to come along yet and d) you guys of course.

If I didn't have the warcraft history in my blood and if WoW's mechanics and usability were not so superior - and obviously if I'd never made the elders, I'd have probably left ages ago. The fact that the lollers have pretty much succeeded in taking over RP servers certainly does not help!

If SWTOR is a huge success and actually outshines WoW, even in usability and playability - it will be interesting to see what happens.

Anyone else get an email today off swtor asking for testing feedback?

I was getting excited thinking I'd been chosen for beta testing, but alas not yet :(

Just a quick but relevant update: Bioware announced today that they slightly changed their plans, so Star Wars: The Old Republic is going to be globally launched both in North America and Europe on the same day, December 20th (with early access for those who pre-ordered).

Hurray!

EDIT: Since I haven't found the time to make a comprehensive presentation of the salient feature of the game (sorry!) let me at least point you to this page, were you can easily click on most features in game and see a quite clear presentation:

http://www.swtor.com/info/systems

(the page gets updated from time to time, so it's not still to be considered complete)

I spent few hours playing SWtOR during the lastest beta test weekend and it looks this game may be for real. There were no bugs, lag was minimal and everything just worked. It reminded me of Rift, in the sense that production quality looked very high.

I was particullary impressed with storytelling and some stories were very good too. Voice acting is excellent. It looks the game has all the strong points of a typical Bioware game. Probably weak points too.

It does follow the tried WoW (or Everquest ) formula with quests, levels, classes, hotkey/cooldown combat system, gear-centric progression etc. I'm sure at the level cap, there will be gear/rep/daily quest grind too. The Secret World or ArcheAge it ain't, but I'm sure many people will enjoy it.
